TRAIN RIDES, ROCK SHRIMP FESTIVAL AND PARADE

As fall approaches, families looking for weekend activities will find a full day of family fun in St. Marys, Georgia, on October 7.

The day begins with a parade at 10 am, St. Marys Express train rides at noon, 2 and 4, and an all-day Rock Shrimp Festival. At the St. Marys Railroad Train Station, guests can tour the St. Marys Railroad Museum and view railroad inspection cars.

“It’s the perfect day to get out and enjoy the history, fun, and adventure that makes Coastal Georgia a great place to live and visit,” said Doug Vaught, St. Marys Express Station Master.

Train passengers will be treated to entertainment all along the train rides that take them through scenic woodlands and over pastoral marshlands. Then at the midway point, characters from the past come alive in a special show that features characters like Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Injun Joe. Lively hobos roaming the train are sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.

“This marks our 5th annual Railroad Days,” said Paul Pleasant, General Manager of St. Marys Railroad. “This is the day that railfans from far away come to immerse themselves in the history of the railroad.”

According to Barbara Ryan, Entertainment Director for St. Marys Express, October 7 also marks the season opening day for the St. Marys Railroad Museum.

“Kids from 2 to 92 will enjoy the collection of working model trains moving along the tracks in the museum at the train station plus the numerous railroad items on display,” said Ryan.

“More and more we are seeing our train riders come in early or stay later with overnight stays at our charming bed and breakfasts and historic inns,” Ryan continued. “What’s more interesting is the fact that we have so many repeat riders since every excursion offers a different theme.”

Tickets for the train rides should be reserved ahead of time by visiting http://www.stmarysrailroad.com or by calling 912-200-5235. Discounts for groups of 10 or more are available by calling 912-729-1103. Tickets are $20 for adults and $14 for children 3 to 12. Kids two and under ride free.

Trains depart at noon, 2 pm and 4 pm from Theatre by the Trax at 1000 Osborne Street in St. Marys.

Other upcoming St. Marys Express excursions include the Halloween Express October 21 and 28, and the Santa Express November 25, December 2 and 9.
